Bolting Rhubarb Deja Vu

Victoria Rhubarb, bolting

I've had a case of deja vu in the garden this week. Just like last year, my rhubarb was off with a bang, growing a foot a minute ( OK, that's a bit of an exaggeration!).  Then seemingly overnight it all bolted - just like last year. At least this year I know why the rhubarb is behaving the way it is and what to do about it.

I have Victoria rhubarb, which is an old variety and apparently prone to bolting but what triggered the urge to produce seed is also a case of deja vu - a very long and very cold winter, just like we had in 2014.

I can't decide if the flower heads are pretty. It doesn't really matter because they have to go. I will cut the flower stalks down to the earth and will be on watch for any more, which I'll remove as soon as I see them.

Last year when this happened I was worried about whether the rhubarb would continue to grow through out the season but it actually went on the thrive. Knowledge is a wonderful thing.

Is you rhubarb bolting, too?

  1. Yes, thanks for the reminder! I saw it out of the corner of my eye the other day and couldn't believe it! It seems so early! So, I will go out this morning, if I remember, and cut the flower stalk. I somehow get sidetracked by all sorts of things out in the garden.

  3. In the event that you need a plenteous, beneficial natural vege cultivate then it's vital to first comprehend somewhat about the distinctive vegetable sorts, and the conditions in which they flourish. Vegetables have a tendency to be assembled into 3 primary classes: foods grown from the ground vegetables; leaf and stem vegetables, and root and globule vegetables, contingent upon the part of the plant that is most normally eaten.
