Kitchen Reorganization Series, Part 6: kitchen gadgets, baking pans, pots and pans

This is the sixth part in an eight part series where I reorganize my kitchen to function more efficiently.

I had been dreading reorganizing these two cupboards because they were such a disaster, but I also knew that once I did, the pay off would be huge! These cupboards hold all my kitchen appliances, tools such as measuring jugs, baking pans and dishes, casseroles, serving plates and all my pots and pans. They really took a beating over the Christmas season and I've been cursing every time I try to find something in there.

My reorganization goals were to have a home for every item, so that putting things away was easy and this mess wouldn't happen again and to store them so that the glass and non-stick surfaces were protected. So lets watch the crazy parade as I pull out everything I had jammed in these cupboards.

Here are the before photos:

I pulled everything out by category and removed the items that I never use and the items that I don't use all the time. The items that I don't need at my finger tips I put aside to be re-homed in my pine hutch.

Here's the first float in the crazy parade, kitchen appliances:

The coffee grinder and slow cooker were rehoused from this group.

Next came the float from Loopyville, which is right next to Crazy Town. Their theme was kitchen tools. After removing the never used and seldom used, I was left with this:

This is a bit more manageable! Next up were the baking pans and pie dishes.

I actually used all of this. Next we have casserole dishes and serving plates:

I was able to cull a few dishes here. Pots and pans are making a guest appearance in the parade this year from the Clash, Clink and Tumble Circus.

A couple of older pans didn't make the cut, here. Finally, bringing up the rear of the Crazy Town Parade we have some party crashers - jugs and plastic covers from the village of Where Did you Come From?

These all went on the empty top shelf in the dry goods cabinet.

I know what you are thinking - How did she get all that stuff in those cabinets? The answer is not easily! The next question is will I get it all back in? With a lot of items removed, I was quite happy with the result.

Here is the cabinet to the left. On the top shelf I put back the appliances with the bread machine in the far corner as I use that the least. On the bottom shelf I put the kitchen tools and the baking pans.

Everything has its place and is easily accessible. In the cabinet to the right, I put the casserole dishes and serving plates on the top shelf. Now the piles are not stacked too high and I don't fear breaking items as I pull something out. On the bottom shelf I was able to line up all the pans with out having to stack them and the frying pans fit easily in front, with paper towels between the pans to protect the non-stick surfaces.

Look at all that empty space and a place for every item. I am very pleased. The crazy parade will have to find a new location next year.

On Thursday I'll deal with all the items that didn't make it back into these cabinets and talk about some of the principles I have learned from this exercise. Next Tuesday I'll finish the series with some solutions for organizing papers and calendars in the kitchen.

Happy organizing!

Sue
